Italian furniture is some of the most sought after in the world; the industry plays a huge role in the Italian economy, being one of the leading manufacturers and exporters. It’s gained popularity for its luxury, style, and history, with many pieces’ origins dating back several centuries.

The first to make this kind of luxury furniture was the new generation of craftsmen from Milan and Florence. They used new techniques such as bronze casting and carving wood to create their pieces. This lead to a lot of innovation with regards to shapes, styles and decoration - many of which you’ll still see today.

World-renowned designers have always been known for their creativity and flair. Ettore Sottsass, Gio Ponti and Marco Zanuso are some of the most well known, with their stunning pieces occasionally popping up in our store.

What is Italian style furniture?

The traditional Italian style is recognisable thanks to its natural materials and simple lines. For instance, in the past people would often use walnut, a type of wood that has a natural lustre.

The furniture may not always be curved and organic like traditional English or American furniture that incorporates flowing lines. Italian style is more linear and segmented with straight edges.

What makes Italian furniture so good?

Italy's furniture has always been of high quality because the country is a leader in woodworking. This means that their furniture is made with top quality materials and the best designs.

We love it at Anemone; Lia’s always on the lookout for the best vintage Italian pieces and our customers are always quick to snap them up.

How do you decorate your home with Italian style?

  1. Keep it clean but welcoming - a lot of Italian furniture is popular due to its subtle textures and accents. Italian style has a luxurious feel without being overbearing.
  2. Start with neutral colours - as above, you’re aiming for a clean, welcoming look and the colour palette is a huge part of that. By using soft colours such as grey and beige, it gives you the opportunity to add some personality with pops of colour from other pieces.
  3. Ceramics! Italian ceramics are hugely famous and rightly so! Adding the right pieces will give your home that signature flair.
  4. Be bold with your lighting - Italian lighting can’t be forgotten and gives you the opportunity to furnish your home with some truly remarkable pieces. Murano lighting is particularly popular and something we love here at Anemone.

It’s this passion for design and decor that fuels Anemone today and we love every minute!
