Luxury Vintage Mirrors

With their dark edges, distressed patches, and ornate frames, vintage mirrors can transform any area instantly. They can add extra light to a room as well as a bit of glamour and flair. At Anemone, luxury vintage mirrors are one of the things we do best!

How to Decorate with Vintage Mirrors

Retro mirrors can bring many benefits to your living space or dressing room. Combined with wall art, a vintage table, or any of your current bedroom furniture, these pieces can give another shape to your home decor.

Here are a few tips that will help you capitalise on the beauty and elegance these mirrors have to offer:

1. Consider the Reflection

Though most people choose where to hang mirrors based on available wall space, it is essential to consider what object the mirror will reflect. You might, for instance, hang the mirror across an important painting, furniture, or architectural element to give the feature more importance.

To consider the reflection, remember to mind if you're using flat or convex mirrors, as this can change significantly the impact they'll have on your home decor.

2. Think Big

Do not be afraid to place a large wall mirror in a small area. The mirror will create the illusion of expanse and depth to make it feel bigger. It can definitively bring value to your home decor.

3. Create a Focal Point

Wall mirrors are often placed above dining room buffets and mantels because they make excellent focal points. Consider hanging sconces on both sides of the mirror or covering an entire wall with vintage mirrors.

4. Use Several Vintage Wall Mirrors Simultaneously

You could also create a gallery of vintage wall mirrors. Should you opt to go with this design idea, ensure that you implement it in a chamber with minimal clutter. Filling an already-cluttered room with several mirrors could be overkill on you and your guests.

5. Pay Attention to the Frame

You can achieve an edgy, traditional, or classic style depending on the frame you pick. For instance, a chinoiserie mirror will have more of an impact on a room than a wood frame.

The mirror itself can also contribute to the house style. With a huge range of shapes and styles, vintage mirrors with smoky glass and imperfections could significantly contribute to the look of your space.

If you follow this tip, you can try to combine oval and square frames to enhance your home decor and test if they'll suit your style.

Where to Display Your Vintage Mirror

The placement of any retro mirror is everything. Always hang your mirror at the right height for the space. While hanging it at eye level can work, hanging it higher or lower is also an option, depending on the scenario. Here are a few places on which you could hang your vintage mirror:

  • Hang small vintage mirrors on the vanities in your bathroom and arrange flower vases between them for the mirrors to catch the edges of your floral displays.

  • Centre a vintage mirror on the vanity and add scarves across the top to evoke Hollywood’s golden age.

  • Place a set of mismatched, small vintage mirrors either in a cluster or down the hallway.

  • Position a vintage mirror across a window to illuminate a dark room.

  • You could also hang some mirrors above your fireplace.

Also keep in mind that vintage mirrors are a great match for luxury Italian furniture, marble tables, and Murano lamps.

Got a Bit Dirty? Here’s How to Clean Your Vintage Mirror

Over time, fingerprints, dirt, and dust find their way onto all of your home’s reflective surfaces. Because vintage mirrors are covered with a mercury or silver layer, you will have to put extra effort when removing dust and smudges from them.

The following is a step-by-step guide on how to clean your vintage mirror.

First, you will need:

  • Rubbing alcohol

  • A jug of water

  • White vinegar

  • Newspaper

  • A spray bottle

  • A microfibre cloth

  • Shaving cream

The steps:

  1. Mix a cup of rubbing alcohol, a cup of water, and one teaspoon of white vinegar.

  2. Pour this mixture into the spray bottle.

  3. Spray your mirror’s entire surface.

  4. Get a newspaper and rub the surface.

  1. Take some shaving cream and spray it on the surface.

  2. Grab your microfiber cloth and wipe the surface clean.

  3. Pour clean water on the cloth and wipe the mirror once more.

How can You Identify Antique Mirrors?

Vintage or antique mirrors can be identified by small imperfections on the glass surface, the result of some old-fashioned manufacturing production methods.

If you can check carefully and closely the mirror glass, you'll be able to see wavy vapours or small random bubbles inside it. Those manufacturing faults are signs of imperfect production methods but don't actually confirm it's an antique mirror.

Beyond that, you could also look for the craftsman's signature, as this was a common practice among manufacturers in the 1800s. A maker's tag or mark can be visible on the back of the mirror or its frame. If you can find that mark, this can help you determine the mirror's age.

How Old are Vintage Mirrors?

Antique mirrors, generally, are the pieces built at least 100 years ago. It's possible that modern mirror designers copy the style of vintage mirrors, since they're so appealing and never go out of style.
